White City All Stars vs Oak Hill (Peter
Savill)
July 26, 2013
White City All Stars won the toss and elected
to bowl. George Oborne and Kit McCrystal opened the bowling on what was to be
not so close a game as we had hoped, with McCrystal giving away five wides on
the first over of his spell (with some very athletic diving from Tubby
Shenfield
to deny extras from gaining even more runs). Oborne had a better
first over with very few being given away, however the skill of the batsmen
proved to be too much until the fourth over when K. McCrystal improved enough
to get the first wicket of the game. This was quickly followed by G. Oborne’s
wicket to dismiss the third batsman for just seven runs. However, the strength
and depth of the opposing batsmen proved to be too much, as the first and
fourth batsmen quickly scored their half centuries. The fourth batsman went on
to gain his century before being retired due to the destruction of the WCAS
bowlers. The whole WCAS side was glad to see the back of him. Unfortunately the
departure of the fourth batsman was followed with a new big hitter who quickly
brought his score into the high fifties. Meanwhile, WCAS captain Peter Oborne
had a major breakthrough by dismissing the opening batsman on 61. The remaining
batsmen saw out the rest of the forty overs to come to a score of 282 runs for
6. There were some interesting moments in the field including comical dives
from club life president Damien McCrystal and Beesh, the latter managing to
roll down the hill on the far side of the boundary. There was also a dropped
catch by K. McCrystal off Bill Coales, who attracted further admiration by chasing
a ball and stooping to flick it up into the hands of a grateful fielder. Tim
Shipman’s fielding achieved brilliance as he stopped numerous runs (despite the
score the fielding from WCAS was actually quite good). Looking at the bowling,
even though Shipman and Coales were giving away little more than 10 per
over - and I hasten to add that they bowled mostly dot balls - this
was only because the batsmen hit some sixes, one of them in Shipman’s
over (I quote from Shippers himself: “The largest six in
the history of the tour”). All this being said it was a spirited bowling
and fielding performance against a very strong Oak Hill batting side.
Our batting performance, although not as good,
was strong and showed evidence of a comeback into the huge 282 score set
previously. A curious decision saw our opening batsman Jesh Rajasingham out on
19, and confusion in the calling led to our other opener, P.Oborne, being out.
A couple of quick wickets saw Shenfield facing the bowlers sooner than
expected. This was brilliant for the all stars as he and Beesh saw out a 58 partnership
in style. However Beesh was soon caught brilliantly which allowed Tom Davenport
to come in and hit a quick few runs before being caught out to T. Savill.
K.McCrystal and Coales saw out the rest of the game scoring very few runs in
the process - a partnership of 15. White City lost but Savill’s team found
themselves wishing they had got the two remaining wickets.
